Creative Problem Solving

Application

The Creative Problem Solving (CPS) method provides a framework for problem solving of very general applicability. It should be used whenever an unfamiliar problem is to be addressed; when the accepted solutions to a familiar problem do not appear to be satisfactory; or when the penalties for a less than optimal solution are severe, e.g. when contemplating major investment or major organisational or process change.

Method

The problem solving process is divided into three stages. Each stage is made up of a divergent phase, where large numbers of issues, ideas or solutions are generated, and a convergent phase, where these ideas are grouped, classified and selected.

Problem Clarification
Identification of the issues to be tackled. The initial perception of the problem is frequently too constrained, and needs to be recognised as an instance of a larger problem.

Solution generation and selection
It is important to generate a wide range of possible solutions. Creativity techniques are used to suppress premature analysis and encourage novelty.

Action Planning
The route to the best solution may not be obvious. Exploration of alternative implementation strategies will yield dividends and help to secure buy-in to the solution.
